Using sand animation, in which images are drawn in sand on a lightbox, I create sequences based on the Rorschach-like shapes formed by Ari's hands in the sand. From his abstract starting visuals, I create representative characters—a goat, a woman, a bird—who materialize and perform, only to be displaced once again by his play. Once moved, the sand figures can never be reconstituted. This is both a frustration and a relief. A sequence that would normally require many takes has one chance to work, and if it does not, I must still commit to using it. This play-based collaboration explores the tension we both feel in our respective seasons of life: desire for continuity and control, and the beauty of its impossibility. The film is always in flux, growing and adapting as my son gets older and his agency and interests develop. The film is projected through the bottom of a literal sandbox, which viewers are invited to activate with their hands and with brushes. Just as I navigate the duelling forces of control and surrender within our collaboration, viewers negotiate their own relationship to the work, deciding how much of the film to cover and reveal. Each interaction produces a different viewing experience, making visible the same tensions of agency, impermanence, and shared authorship that structure the film itself.
